Who I am
I have a PhD in cultural anthropology and have researched the “how” and “why” of self-transformation including emotional transformation in mental institutions, body and belief changes through fitness regimens and gym communities, and how understanding and modifying oneself at the molecular level shapes self-understanding and confidence. I’ve published books, articles, blogs, podcasts, and essays on these topics. I’ve done research in Rwanda, Uganda, India, Australia, and the United States. I’m currently collaborating with SPRHRA, a women’s sportswear company, on female athlete performance and confidence.
I’m a full professor at Brooklyn College, CUNY. I’ve taught there for fourteen years.
I’m also an athlete. I began Olympic Weightlifting at 41 years old and was masters world champion at 44 and national champion and record-holder at 45 and 46.
I link these three parts of myself - professor, researcher, athlete - in my Harness Your E! Power workshop where I help other women leverage their biology to be strong, powerful, and healthy in all stages of life.
